The MetroStars, even with half of a New York name, are the only professional soccer team in New Jersey. Major League Soccer is broken down into three Divisions with each having four teams; The Easter Division, The Central Division and the Western Division. The MetroStars play in the Eastern Division. The other teams in their Division are Miami, New England and DC United. Each team plays two home games and two road games against the teams in their division and one home game and one road game against the teams outside of their division. The MetroStars play at Giants Stadium, also home to the NY Giants and NY Jets. The season runs from Late March to Early September each year, with the playoffs and championship ending in September.

The New Jersey Pride Professional Outdoor Lacrosse Team plays their home games at Commerce Bank Park in Bridgewater, NJ. The Pride are charter members of Major League Lacrosse, the professioanl outdoor league that had its inaugural season during the summer of 2001.

The New Jersey Stallions Men's Professional Soccer Club, founded in 1992, is a member of the United Soccer Leagues and is affiliated with Major League Soccer's MetroStars as a farm team. The New Jersey Lady Stallions Women's Elite Soccer Club, founded in 1998, is a member of the United Soccer Leagues and is affiliated with Women's United Soccer Association's Philadelphia Charge as a farm team.
